Sonobeat's fifth stereo 45 RPM rock single (1968)
Fifty years ago, in June 1968, Austin, Texas-based Sonobeat Records releases its fifth 45 RPM stereo rock single, Watch Out by Lavender Hill Express. The preceding year, Sonobeat's first single by Lavender Hill Express, Visions, has been a Central Texas smash hit, so a second Sonobeat single release by the Austin supergroup is inevitable. Sonobeat tries a couple of exotic sonic effects in its recording of Watch Out, including "flanging" the basic instrumental track before lead guitar and vocal overdubs are added – this gives the backing track the distinctive swooshing sound – and a live echo on drummer Rusty Wier's snare punctuation, courtesy of the massive acoustics of Vulcan Gas Company, the venue where Sonobeat records the instrumental backing tracks for the single.
Formed when two of Austin's hottest rock bands break up in mid-1967, Lavender Hill Express rapidly becomes one of Austin's most sought-after party and club bands. The quintet consists of two former members of The Wig, Rusty Wier (drums) and Jess Yaryan (bass guitar), and two former members of the Babycakes, Layton DePenning (guitars) and Leonard Arnold (guitars), who are joined in founding Lavender Hill Express by Johnny Schwertner (keyboards), formerly of another hot Austin band, The Reasons Why. Notably, all five band members sing lead and harmony. Layton, Rusty, Leonard, and Johnny compose original songs for the band. Watch Out is the hard driving rocker by drummer Rusty Wier, who will become a founding father, along with other members of Lavender Hill Express, of Austin's progressive country movement in the early 1970s and will enjoy a solid solo career as a singer/songwriter.
